If you are from Africa, you may be familiar with the saying that. "it's not about what you know but who you know." In the United States of America, who you know is important but much regard is paid to people with expert status due to their indepth knowledge in usually one topic or a few disciplines in their industry. So what makes a person an expert, how does one reach expert status and how does one communicate such status to potential beneficiary of such expertise? Let us dive in deeper.
The first step in this 3-step process to reaching expert status is the mastery of a focused body of knowledge. You may ask, "How does one choose a discipline and then gain mastery?" An area of passion is the best place to start for some people to decide their niche. Now that an area of expertise is decided, it is time to study new skills relating to it daily or as much as possible.
The second step to becoming an expert in your chosen field has to do with implementing or practicing the new skills you are learning. The idea is to be able to retain as much valuable information as possible so you have a wealth of concentrated knowledge to pull from anytime you need to. This action of practicing what you have learned is important as it gets you quicker to "knowing your stuff." This mastery of a displine helps breed confidence.
The third and final step to reaching expert staus in your industry entails teaching the new skills you have acquired (or are still aquiring) to others. Nothing says "expert/authority" than when one makes fabulous presentations about familiar subjects and does so competently. In our technologically advanced age, there aremore than a few ways to communicate ones expertise to others: maintaning a blog, writing a book(s), making videos and podcasts, making radio, television and web show appearances, giving speeches etc. are all excellent ways to promote ones position as an expert.
There you have it, the 3-step process to attaining and preserving expert status; the study, practice and teach technique of becoming an authority in your industry.
